The songwriting on this album is excellent, exploring drunkenness, tough love and ‘50s Americana. This album captures the essence of what road trips were like in the early 2010s sat in the back of your parents’ car with Born To Die playing through your earphones and you just looking out of the window, pretending to be in a sad film. What I mean by this is that a lot of her other albums (which I’ll get into soon) are better listened to in one session like a continuous piece, but Born To Die does a great job of being an album for any occasion. Blending alternative pop with baroque pop (pop combined with classical elements, which are present in the orchestral parts of songs like Born To Die), Born To Die remains an accessible and memorable Lana album because of its ability to be listened to in one session or as separate singles. I feel like this is the best introduction to Lana’s music because of its accessibility. This is the album that broke Lana into the mainstream, gaining her countless platinums, millions of album sales and over 300 weeks in the Billboard charts. My favourites may be obvious, but they won’t influence my ordering. The listing order isn’t a ranking, as I think you should all decide for yourself.
I’ll be writing a few paragraphs per album, so feel free to just skip to the ‘Standout tracks’ parts of my post (I’ll include 5 tracks for the studio albums/Paradise EP and 3 for the demos) so you can get the basics from this post. I’ll cover all of her studio albums, EPs and demos, but I’ll go through them all separately. I’ll go through each of her albums, listing them in the order in which I think serves as the best introduction to Lana’s music. I’ve seen many posts on this sub over the past few months asking for recommendations on where to start for Lana’s music, so I thought I’d create my own beginner’s guide. discussion posts that do not foster discussion, low quality images/badly cropped memes, short reaction posts/rants/showerthoughts.
